Leader of the Foreign Policy Lightweight Brigade

GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, the former governor from Bain is set to visit Poland at the end of the month at the invitation of Lech Walesa. This may be in part because all the current vice presidential candidates are foreign policy lightweights. It will be part of a six-day overseas trip that will include stops in England and Israel.

The six-day “listen and learn” tour includes a July 27 visit to the Olympic opening ceremony and a fundraising event among Americans living in overseas. A pair of deceased British investors may also be tied to the candidate through their contributions to his first private equity fund. His July 28 visit to Israel will include the obligatory declaration to stand strong with our allies.

But he isn't taking the opportunity to visit Moscow, Beijing or Brussels. And since he declared Russia is America's primary geopolitical adversary, not making the trip to Russia may be a bad idea.

Given the advantage that President Obama has in the foreign policy arena and that Romney is seeking his advice from former vice president Dick Cheney, one has to wonder how this six day tour will result in a learning curve that produces real understanding.
